Craniosacral Therapy

What is CranioSacral Therapy?

Traditionally there has not been a lot of consideration for the baby’s perspective on their time in the womb or their experiences of birth, but there is now more and more discussion and research regarding the importance of gentle support being offered to babies in the first few weeks of life.

The positioning of a baby in the mothers womb and the process in which they are born and transitioned into the outside world, may have caused some discomfort or displacement of cranial bones, nerves and/or other structures that can cause a wealth of symptoms from very early on.

Some babies may struggle with tensions throughout the body which can manifest as having difficulties and discomfort with feeding, processing milk and even sleeping.

Craniosacral therapy may support the baby’s system to rectify these symptoms and improve their general wellbeing. This is relevant also even if the pregnancy and birth were considered as trouble free.

Parents commonly bring their baby for Craniosacral Therapy in the first weeks following birth as it can be helpful:

  • In establishing and supporting breastfeeding
  • In developing good sleep patterns
  • In easing early infant feeding problems including colic, reflux and allergies
  • In rectifying torticollis (side preference of your babies head)
  • In bonding with parents and siblings

The baby’s parents may be invited to be part of the session and as the baby responds to treatment, as the baby may want to feed, be reassured and this shared experience can deepen the bonds within the new family.

Young babies may be cuddled and fed during treatment and older babies can play with their parents and the therapist so make sure to bring their favourite toys!
